David Shapiro (1944-2014) American, Abstract Lithograph. Abstract print in soft, pale blues and flowing lines. Signed in lower right. Numbered 44/125 in lower left. Unframed.

David Shapiro (1944-2014) was a prolific abstract painter, lithographer, and printmaker whose work explored color, form, and texture, often reflecting his practice as a Buddhist through signs and symbols that evoke meditative calm. Educated at Pratt Institute and Indiana University, he taught at Barnard College and Parsons School of Design and collaborated with presses including Tandem, Wildwood, and Goya-Girl, exhibiting in over eighty solo shows worldwide. Influenced by Paul Klee, Brice Marden, and Mark Tobey, Shapiro emphasized pattern, movement, and surface texture using materials like Nepalese and Japanese paper, metal filings, pumice, and fabric, creating works that expressed “allostasis,” or stability through change. His art integrated flowing waves, mudra gestures, and mandala forms to connect breath, body, and canvas, using calligraphic strokes as extensions of his meditation and awareness of the surrounding world.
