Edmund Aylburton Willis (1808–1899) British/American, Oil on Canvas Genre Painting of Dogs. Oil on canvas realistic genre painting depicting a group of dogs standing at the door of a kitchen, investigating the leftovers. Signed lower right, dated 1880. Framed.
Overall Size: 18 1/4 x 16 1/4 in.
Sight Size: 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.Edmund Aylburton Willis (1808–1899) was a British-born landscape and genre painter who established his artistic career in the United States after immigrating from Bristol, England, to New York City in 1831. Coming from a family of artists—his father, John A. Willis, and brother, Henry Willis, were also painters—he became known for his nostalgic rural scenes featuring children, livestock, and pastoral settings. Willis exhibited at the National Academy of Design and was a member of the Brooklyn Art Society. He sometimes signed his work under variations like A. Van Willis or A.V. Willis. His paintings, such as Fording the Herd and Friends, continue to appear at auctions, reflecting enduring interest in his evocative depictions of 19th-century American life.
