Elizabeth O’Neill Verner (1883-1979) American, Architectural Etching Print of Lower Church St. Black-and-white etching depicting a street scene on Lower Church Street in Charleston, South Carolina, featuring several figures in front of a prominent building with classical columns. Titled lower left. Signed lower right. Framed.
Size: 13 x 11 in.
Sight Size: 8 x 7 1/2 in.Elizabeth O’Neill Verner (1883–1979) was an American artist, author, and preservationist best known for her evocative etchings, drawings, and pastels depicting the historic streets, architecture, and everyday life of Charleston. Born and raised in Charleston, she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later became a leading figure in the Charleston Renaissance. After the death of her husband in 1925, Verner turned to art professionally to support her family, producing detailed etchings and pastel scenes that captured the city’s architecture, gardens, and local residents, including notable portraits of African American flower vendors. Her work helped promote appreciation for Charleston’s historic character and contributed to preservation efforts, and today her art is held in major museum collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum
