English Silverplate Art Deco Letter or Toast Holder. English art deco silverplated letter holder with six slots on four ball feet. Could also be used to hold toast, but probably not simultaneously.
Letter holders are functional and decorative desk or household accessories designed to organize incoming and outgoing correspondence. Traditionally made from materials such as wood, brass, silver, or leather, they often feature multiple slots or compartments to separate letters, bills, and notes. Popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries, letter holders were both practical and ornamental, with designs ranging from simple utilitarian shapes to elaborately crafted pieces adorned with repoussé, engraving, or inlay. They were commonly found on writing desks, hall tables, or in offices, helping maintain order in an era when handwritten communication was essential.
