Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) German, Constructed Puzzle of Hummingbirds. Completed jigsaw puzzle featuring a vibrant, detailed illustration of various species of hummingbirds amidst foliage, reminiscent of 19th-century ornithological art. Framed.

Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919) was a German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, and artist renowned for his pioneering work in marine biology and for visualizing the complexity of life through his intricate illustrations. Haeckel popularized the study of microorganisms, plankton, and radiolarians, creating detailed, scientifically precise drawings that combined accuracy with striking aesthetic appeal. His books, such as Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), influenced both science and the decorative arts, inspiring movements like Art Nouveau with their organic, symmetrical patterns. Beyond his illustrations, Haeckel contributed to evolutionary theory, championing Darwinism in Germany, though some of his interpretations—such as the controversial “recapitulation theory”—have been disputed.
