Romain de Tirtoff (1892–1990), known by the pseudonym Erté, was a Hungarian-French artist widely regarded as the father of Op Art (Optical Art), a movement that explored the visual effects of geometric abstraction. Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, he moved to Paris in 1912, where his passion for theater and dance led him to embrace Art Nouveau and later Art Deco. Erté's elegant fashion and graphic designs became globally influential, notably through the more than 200 magazine covers he created for publications like Harper's Bazaar and Vogue between 1915 and 1937. His unrivaled place in 20th-century art spans fashion, set design for film and theater, and later prints, bronzes, and wearable art.
