Framed photograph from the New York Times Collection that shows Lincoln and his generals a few weeks after the bloody battle at Antietam. A label on the back reads:Lincoln and Troops at Antietam - 1862. President Lincoln visits General B. McClellan and his staff near Sharpsburg, Maryland on Oct. 3, 1862, a few weeks after the Battle of Antietam. Lincoln was there to persuade McClellan to move the troops and attack General Robert E. LeeÂ’s army. But McClellan declined to attack and was dismissed as commander of the Army of the Potomac a few days later.Five of [John Wilkes] BoothÂ’s conspirators in the assassination [of Lincoln] sit just below Lincoln in this photograph by Alexander Gardner.”This is a modern reprint. The original was a silver album in print now at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.The information on the back is inaccurate. The photo does not show any of BoothÂ’s conspirators. The soldiers depicted in the photo are Col. Delos B. Sacket, Capt. George Monteith, Lt. Col. Nelson B. Sweitzer, Gen. George W. Morell, Col. Alexander S. Webb (Chief of Staff, 5th Corps), Gen. McClellan, Scout Adams, Dr. Jonathan Letterman (Army Medical Director), unknown, President Lincoln, Gen. Henry J. Hunt, Gen. Fitz-John Porter, unknown, Col. Frederick T. Locke, Gen. Andrew A. Humphreys, and Capt. George Armstrong Custer (who died at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876). Photo is framed and matted. Overall Size: 21.25 x 17.25 in.
