- Lot Description
It’s a classic French writing desk characterized by its flat, spacious surface, often with drawers underneath, designed specifically for writing and working. Unlike a simple table, a Bureau Plat is meant for office or study use, combining elegance and functionality, typically seen in 18th and 19th-century French furniture. This design has a large leather writing surface on the top and terminates with bronze ormolu claw feet.
The figural ormolu designs often represent nymphs, muses, or Bacchantes (followers of Bacchus, god of wine and revelry). They symbolize beauty, fertility, and nature, fitting with Rococo’s love of organic, flowing designs. The faces may also be inspired by classical mythology, blending human and floral forms to create an elegant yet dramatic effect. Surrounding the figures, you’ll often see acanthus leaves, scrollwork, and other natural motifs—hallmarks of the Rococo style that emphasize fluidity and lightness.
