George Barrel (20th Century) American, Oil on Canvas Mid-Century Modern Figural Impressionist. Impressionistic oil painting featuring a woman in a yellow dress seated amidst a bright, floral setting, rendered with thick, textured palette knife strokes in a palette of warm yellows, soft pinks, and muted greens. Framed.

Sight Size: 35 3/4 x 35 3/4 in.George Barrel was a mid-20th-century painter and mixed-media artist associated with the broader currents of postwar modernism in the United States. Active primarily in the 1940s through the 1960s, Barrel developed a style that blended abstract expressionist gestures with structured, often geometric compositions, reflecting the tension between spontaneity and control that defined much of the era’s art. His work frequently explored themes of urbanization, industrial growth, and the psychological landscape of postwar America, using layered textures and a muted, earthy palette. Though not as widely recognized as some of his contemporaries, Barrel exhibited regionally and contributed to artist collectives that fostered experimentation outside major art centers, leaving behind a body of work appreciated for its quiet complexity and thoughtful engagement with mid-century cultural shifts.
