Gilt Bronze Earth-Touching Buddha Figure.
Buddha figure in seated lotus pose performing the earth-touching mudra.
Size: 9 1/2 x 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 in.
The Earth-Touching Buddha, or Bhumisparsha Mudra Buddha, is a significant iconographic representation in Buddhist art symbolizing the moment of Siddhartha Gautama’s enlightenment. Depicted seated in meditation with the right hand reaching down to touch the earth, this gesture calls the Earth itself as witness to his triumph over Mara, the tempter, and the forces of illusion. Often shown with serene countenance, crossed legs, and an urna or halo, the Earth-Touching Buddha embodies steadfastness, spiritual awakening, and the victory of wisdom and compassion over ignorance and desire. This motif, found across South and Southeast Asian Buddhist art, serves as a powerful reminder of enlightenment’s grounding in inner resolve and connection to the natural and moral order of the world.
