- Lot Description
Hal David Berger (1953-2003) American, (2) Art Glass Paperweights. One is a simple clear controlled bubble form, while the other is one of his more elaborate pieces with an incredible spiral pattern over a purple center. Visible signature and dated '95 on the colorful piece.
Size: 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 in. 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 in.
Hal David Berger was born in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1950, and developed an early love of art, finding his calling in art glass in his twenties. After studying at Corning, Pilchuck, and other schools across the country he, his wife Joanne, and later his son Brian all worked together at a home furnace he built in Emporia, with his most successful period in the 1990s, producing particularly sought after paperweights and sculptures with controlled bubbles, Jack-in-the-Pulpit structuring, and a signature thread dripping-and-spiralling technique he pioneered. Tragically, he died at the age of 53 from an unexpected heart attack on October 18th, 2003, and his surviving works now command large sums from die-hard fans of American studio glass.
