Hiroyuki Tajima (1911–1984) was a prominent Japanese printmaker associated with the sōsaku-hanga (creative print) movement. Born in Tokyo, he graduated from Nihon University in 1932 and later from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1934, specializing in Western-style painting. Tajima studied woodblock printing under Nagase Yoshiro and fabric dyeing with Matsugoro Hirokawa. In 1946, he began creating prints and joined the Bijutsu Bunka Kyokai, a group dedicated to abstract and surrealist art. His work is renowned for its richly pigmented, abstract compositions that draw inspiration from East Asian calligraphy, traditional Japanese painting, and Zen Buddhist concepts of space. During the 1960s and 1970s, Tajima developed a distinctive technique involving the use of materials like shellac and shredded paper to create textured surfaces with luminous colors. He also produced landscape prints under the pseudonym Nagai Kiyoshi. Tajima's contributions to modern Japanese printmaking have been recognized internationally, with his works held in major museum collections worldwide.
