- Lot Description
Important Large Chinese Carved Antique Celadon Jade Elephant.
Size With Base: 14 x 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.
From the Appraisal provided by the consignor: The elephant is carved laying on side four-square, with its head facing forward, ears back, and its trunk curled up slightly to the right. The folds of its skin are detailed with incised lines. The skin folds are deeper incisions, but the body is proportionally more realistic, the head less elevated, the ear folds (shaped like closed lotus leaves) more elegantly modeled. A well-defined trunk, which in turn curls up. The tail also is convincing. Overall, this is a relatively straightforward and graceful portrayal of the favorite animal in its symbolic role as signifier of longevity. The jade is of an even tone with inclusions with prominent granular band of green and russet color. It is mounted on a laquered wooden base. The condition is excellent.
