Japanese Koi Pond Porcelain Vase. Japanese porcelain vase decorated with hand painted fish. Bulbous vase bowl with long stemmed neck. Marked on base with signature of artist, Oda Kiyomitsu.
Size: 9 x 9 x 14 in.
Japanese porcelain featuring painted fish is a celebrated decorative tradition that emerged prominently during the Edo period, reflecting both aesthetic refinement and symbolic meaning. Fish motifs—often carp or koi—were painted with fluid brushwork and vivid underglaze or overglaze enamels, symbolizing perseverance, good fortune, and harmony with nature. These designs appeared on a variety of porcelain forms, from dishes and bowls to vases and chargers, produced in major kiln centers such as Arita and Kutani. The combination of crisp white porcelain and lively, naturalistic fish imagery created a dynamic visual effect that appealed to both domestic and export markets, blending technical precision with graceful, symbolic artistry.
