Japanese censers, or kōro, are traditional incense burners that have been an integral part of Japanese culture for centuries, particularly in tea ceremonies, religious rituals, and daily life. These censers are typically crafted from materials such as bronze, copper, or porcelain and are often intricately designed with motifs of nature, animals, or abstract patterns. A common feature of Japanese censers is their elaborate, sometimes ornate construction, with some featuring lids adorned with handles in the shape of animals or other symbolic figures. The censer's purpose is not only to burn incense but also to create a serene atmosphere, reflecting the Japanese reverence for scent and the meditative aspects of incense. During the Edo period, some censers were even small enough to be worn as pendants, allowing individuals to carry the calming scent with them. Today, kōro remains an important symbol in Japanese culture, associated with refinement, spirituality, and a connection to nature.
