Japanese Meiji Period Satsuma Moriage Earthenware Vase. Japanese Satsuma ware earthenware vase, characterized by its creamy crackle-glazed surface and a detailed scene of scholars or immortals rendered in fine polychrome enamels and heavy "moriage" gold gilding.
Size: 6 1/2 x 6 1/2 x 15 3/4 in.
Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery that originated in the Satsuma domain (modern-day Kagoshima Prefecture) during the late Edo period and became especially popular in the 19th century. It is typically characterized by a creamy ivory crackled glaze, finely detailed hand-painted designs, and rich use of gold, often depicting scenes of court life, landscapes, or religious imagery. Many Satsuma pieces were produced for export during the Meiji Restoration, when Japanese decorative arts gained international acclaim for their intricate craftsmanship and ornate style.
