Japanese Midcentury Stoneware Chawan Tea Bowl. Handcrafted ceramic tea bowl, or chawan, featuring a white speckled glaze with a subtle ribbed texture and vertical brown decorative accents near the rim. Marked on rim.
Size: 4 3/4 x 4 3/4 x 4 in.
A chawan is a traditional Japanese tea bowl used in the preparation and drinking of powdered green tea in the Japanese tea ceremony. Typically hand-thrown or hand-formed in ceramic, chawan bowls vary widely in shape, glaze, and texture, reflecting different regional pottery traditions and aesthetic ideals such as Wabi-sabi. Styles may include rustic, irregular bowls associated with Raku ware as well as more refined porcelain examples, and many are designed for seasonal use in tea gatherings. Valued for both their functionality and artistic character, chawan bowls are central objects in tea culture and are often appreciated as individual works of ceramic art.
