Japanese Satsuma Porcelain Vase. Japanese enameled Satsuma-style vase with gold wire outline, floral rim and neck, scenes of figures in courtyard. With protruding handles on neck stem, ruffled mouth.
Condition: Pock marks due to firing process. Slight rubbing throughout.
Size: 9 x 9 x 24 in.
Japanese Satsuma ware is a type of finely decorated pottery that originated in the late 16th century in the Satsuma domain of southern Kyushu and became especially renowned during the 19th century for its export pieces. Distinguished by its creamy, crackled glaze and intricate overglaze enamel and gilt decoration, Satsuma ware often features elaborate scenes of figures, landscapes, mythological subjects, and dense floral or geometric patterns. While early examples were more restrained, later Meiji-era pieces catered to Western tastes with highly detailed, almost jewel-like surfaces. Valued both for its technical craftsmanship and its decorative richness, Satsuma pottery stands as a testament to Japan’s fusion of traditional artistry with global market appeal.
