Javanese Zoomorphic Wooden Coconut Scraper. A Javanese wooden coconut scraper in equine shape.
Size: 6 1/2 x 14 1/2 x 32 in.
Zoomorphic coconut scrapers are functional yet whimsically artistic tools traditionally used in South and Southeast Asia for grating coconut meat, often carved in the shapes of animals like horses, lions, or birds. Typically made of wood with a serrated metal blade attached at one end, these scrapers double as low stools, allowing the user to sit and push the coconut against the blade. The animal forms aren't just decorative—they reflect regional aesthetics, cultural symbolism, and in some cases, beliefs about protection or good fortune. Today, they’re appreciated not only as utilitarian objects but also as charming examples of vernacular folk art.
