Sight Size: 19 x 24 1/4 in.John James Audubon (1785–1851) was a Franco-American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter best known for his monumental work The Birds of America, a stunning collection of life-sized, hand-colored illustrations documenting over 400 species of North American birds. Born in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) and raised in France, Audubon emigrated to the United States as a young man, where his deep fascination with wildlife and scientific observation merged with a talent for dramatic, lifelike composition. He traveled extensively through the American frontier, often living in rugged conditions to study and paint birds in their natural habitats. His meticulous attention to anatomical detail and dynamic poses set a new standard for wildlife illustration and helped establish ornithology as a scientific discipline. Audubon’s legacy endures not only in art and science but also in conservation, with the National Audubon Society bearing his name.
