Josep Cardona i Furró (also known as José Cardona, 1878–1923) was a Catalan sculptor who trained at Barcelona’s School of Fine Arts (“La Lonja”) under Manel Fuxà and later studied in Paris. Influenced by Impressionist and Symbolist aesthetics—possibly drawing inspiration from sculptors like Pavel Trubetskoy—he became known for both full-length and small-format portrait sculptures featuring a soft, impressionistic energy. Cardona exhibited widely, including a monographic show in 1909 at the Fayans Catalán gallery in Barcelona, and worked abroad in Argentina and Madrid. His pieces—ranging from intimate portraits to figures like “Girl with Basket” and “The Wet Nurse”—are held in collections and continue to appear in auctions, valued for their subtle artistry, European modernist style, and historical connection to Barcelona’s early 20th-century art milieu.
