Joseph Pennell (1857-1926) American, New York Etching Print. Depicts the New York Stock Exchange (copyright symbol and N.Y.S.E. in bottom left corner).
Overall Size: 18 1/2 x 15 1/2 in.
Sight Size: 11 3/4 x 9 1/2 in.
Joseph Pennell was born July 4th, 1857 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to a family of Quakers. Though he faced rejection from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts initially, he later studied there under Thomas Eakins after attending the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art. Pennell’s abrasive personality led to difficulties, including a racist incident involving a fellow African American student. He opened his own studio in 1880, but like his mentor James McNeill Whistler eventually left America for London, England, where he taught at the Slade School of Art. Throughout his life he published numerous illustrated books and photo-documentary works, and spent his final years in America, lecturing, touring, and teaching at the Art Students League right up until his death on April 23rd, 1926 in Brooklyn Heights, New York. His extensive body of work, comprising over 1,800 prints, captured subjects from industrial Sheffield to Italian landmarks, earning him international acclaim and awards for a prolific career as a graphic artist and illustrator whose work is still studied today.
