- Lot Description
Kenji Ushiku (1922-2012) Japanese, Signed and Numbered Woodblock Print. Signed in pencil bottom right. Numbered 94/125 in pencil bottom middle. Titled in bottom left.
A striking blue splotch in the upper left indicates a body of water, while the main field is dominated by realistic reed shapes and small birds scrounging for worms among the grasses below. Titled in Kanji in pencil bottom left, loosely translates to "Butterbur Day." Framed.
Condition: Commensurate with age.
Overall Size: 10 x 12 1/4 x 3/4 in.
Sight Size: 5 x 6 1/4 in.
Kenji Ushiku (1922-2012) was a Japanese printmaker born in Chiba Prefecture who received his formal education at the Tokyo School of Fine Art. He began publishing etchings in the early 1950s, focusing on still lifes and bucolic farm animals using color etching and aquatint. Later in his career, he shifted toward abstraction, creating minimalist relief prints with reduced palettes. A member of the Japan Print Association, his sought-after works were exhibited internationally and are held in public collections, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
