Size: 11 1/2 x 11 1/2 x 2 1/2 in.
Mid-century modern studio pottery, flourishing primarily from the 1940s through the 1960s, represents a fusion of functional design, artistic experimentation, and a modernist aesthetic that emphasized simplicity, organic forms, and the beauty of natural materials. Influenced by Scandinavian design, the American Craft Movement, and Japanese ceramics, potters favored hand-thrown or minimally altered forms, often showcasing the texture of clay, subtle glazes, and earthy tones. These works moved away from mass-produced tableware, emphasizing individual craftsmanship and the expressive possibilities of form and surface. Celebrated artists such as Peter Voulkos, Beatrice Wood, and Warren MacKenzie exemplified this era, creating pottery that was both utilitarian and sculptural, bridging the gap between fine art and everyday use while shaping contemporary ceramic practice.
