Mary C. Proctor (20th/21st Century) American, Outsider Painted Board Hanging Folk Art. Painted board with wire hanger of a woman holding a paint bucket. Written across the top, "The time of harvest when you reaped the fields then ye shall enjoy the produce", signed by Mary C. Proctor. Written on pain can: "Wee I feel the sun gonna shine when I paint".
Size: 24 x 17 x 4 1/2 in.
Mary C. Proctor is a self-taught African American folk artist known for her vibrant, mixed-media paintings that often feature religious themes, personal narratives, and inspirational messages. Born in 1960, she began creating art in the 1990s after a life-changing vision following the tragic loss of her grandmother and other relatives in a house fire. Using found materials like doors and wood panels, she incorporates collage, text, and paint to express spiritual and cultural themes. Her work has been exhibited in major museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and is celebrated for its storytelling and uplifting messages.
