- Lot Description
Native American Acoma Pottery Vase. Traditional shape and geometric designs throughout in orange, cream, and black colors. Signed "Acoma" on bottom with a small drawing of a plant, likely an agave.
Size: 3 3/4 x 3 1/2 in.
Acoma Pueblo, located about 60 miles west of Albuquerque, New Mexico, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States, with over 2,000 years of occupation. The pueblo consists of four communities known as Sky City (Old Acoma), Acomita, Anzac, and McCartys, and is a National Historic Landmark, with the Acoma tribe federally recognized. Despite conquest by Juan de Oñate in 1599 and forced assimilation through boarding schools, the Acoma have preserved much of their culture and traditions. Today, about 300 people live permanently on the mesa, which features adobe buildings accessed via ladders or a road cut into the rock, and attracts around 55,000 tourists annually under controlled conditions. Acoma pottery, a distinctive artform over a thousand years old, uses local clay mixed with pulverized shards, shaped, painted with traditional geometric and animal designs, and fired after careful inspection; families such as those of Lucy Lewis and Carolyn Concho continue these traditions, producing highly sought-after pieces for collectors and visitors.
