Old Master Mythic Scene Oil Painting, "Diana and Endymion". Old Master oil painting on canvas depicting a courting scene with cherubs, peacocks and bird of prey. Possibly Diana and Endymion. Unsigned.
Condition: Relined.
The myth of Diana and Endymion tells the story of the moon goddess’s love for a mortal shepherd, capturing themes of divine longing, eternal youth, and the stillness of dream. In Roman mythology, Diana (Artemis in Greek) falls in love with the beautiful Endymion and, moved by his beauty or wishing to preserve it, causes him to fall into eternal sleep—sometimes interpreted as a gift, other times as a form of gentle captivity. In art, this myth is often depicted with Diana gazing tenderly at the slumbering Endymion, moonlight bathing the scene in a dreamlike glow. The story reflects the tension between immortality and mortality, desire and silence, and has inspired generations of artists to explore the quiet, poignant intimacy between the divine and the human.
