Oswald Schimmelpfennig (1872–1944) German, Bronze Figural Statue of Man With Lantern. Bronze statue on marble base depicting a man in rugged clothing, holding a lantern aloft. Incise signature near feet.
Size: 8 x 6 1/4 x 20 1/2 in.
Oswald Schimmelpfennig (1872–1944) was a German sculptor renowned for his finely detailed bronze works created around the turn of the 20th century. His sculptures often depict mythological, allegorical, and whimsical figures, blending classical themes with Art Nouveau aesthetics. Notable pieces include Butterfly Girl (c. 1900), a patinated bronze figure of a nude girl with ornate wings, and Moon Bat Girl (1897), featuring a winged nude perched on a crescent moon. Schimmelpfennig's craftsmanship is evident in works like Malachite Bronze (1898), a large sculpture made for Russian tastes, and Two Cherubs Taunting a Satyr (1898), showcasing dynamic interaction between figures. His sculptures have been auctioned internationally, with Butterfly Girl achieving a record price of $8,801 at Christie's in 2011. Schimmelpfennig's legacy endures through his contributions to bronze sculpture, reflecting a harmonious blend of technical skill and artistic expression.
