Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born October 25th, 1881, in Málaga, Spain, a child prodigy trained by his art teacher father from the age of seven who attended the Academy of Fine Arts there and later Madrid’s Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, where he frequently skipped classes to study art independently. His early realism evolved into a Symbolist-influenced Modernist Period (1899-1900), followed by the somber Blue Period (1901-1904) and the lighter, circus-themed Rose Period (1904-1906), during which he gained the patronage of Leo and Gertrude Stein and befriended Henri Matisse. Picasso’s African Period (1907-1909) drew on tribal art and led directly to Cubism (1910-1919), revolutionizing the language of modern painting. He lived a complex personal life, marked by numerous affairs and marriages, including to ballerina Olga Khokhlova, muse Marie-Thérèse Walter, Françoise Gilot, and finally Jacqueline Roque. His work spanned neoclassicism, Surrealism, and political commentary, most famously in Guernica (1937), a response to the bombing of the Spanish town during the Civil War. During World War II he remained in occupied Paris, producing art while avoiding Nazi scrutiny. In his later years he continued painting, sculpting, and experimenting, often challenging the art market with playful works, and when he died on April 8th, 1973 in Mougins, France he left a monumental legacy as one of history’s most influential artists, whose innovations reshaped modern art and whose work continues to dominate museums and collections worldwide.
