Pair of Indonesian Irian Jaya New Guinea Dani Stone Adze Yara Axe. Hand crafted New Guinea adze with polished stone head and wooden handle, with wood splint wrapping. One the stone head keeps coming out.
Size: 13 1/2 x 18 in.
A New Guinea adze is a traditional hand tool used by Indigenous peoples of Papua New Guinea for woodworking, carving, and construction, particularly in the making of canoes, ceremonial objects, and architecture. Typically crafted with a sharpened stone or shell blade lashed to a wooden handle at an angle, the adze is both functional and culturally significant, often featuring intricate carvings or decorative bindings that reflect clan identity or spiritual beliefs. While modern tools have supplanted them in many areas, traditional adzes remain important in ritual contexts and are valued today as examples of skilled craftsmanship and the deep relationship between utility and symbolism in Melanesian material culture.
