- Lot Description
Patricia George (20th/21st Century) American, Signed and Numbered Lithograph. The artist studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, mostly working in the late 1990s and early 2000s on images of boats and harbors. This piece depicts a long canal full of colorful boats surrounded by Mediterranean buildings, devoid of people. Signed in ink lower right. Numbered 18/400 in ink lower left.
Overall Size: 28 1/2 x 24 1/2 in.
Sight Size: 26 x 20 in.
Frame Thickness: 1 in.
The painting of canals has evolved over many centuries, beginning with the works of Italian painter Bernardo Canal (1664-1744) and his son Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto or "Little Canal," which became the informal term for the style. Canaletto was utilized by numerous schools, who adapted their own techniques and methods to experiment with the meticulous attention to architectural detail and hyper-realistic lighting the original form was known for.
