Peter Max, born in Berlin in 1937 to German Jewish parents who fled to Shanghai in 1938, spent a color-saturated childhood influenced by the “calligraphic ballet” of a nearby Buddhist temple before moving with his family to Haifa in 1948, where a school principal encouraged his early artistic talent and he studied under Viennese Expressionist Professor Hünik. After a formative several months in Paris—where drawing classes at the Louvre deepened his appreciation for Fauvism—the family settled in Brooklyn, New York, and Max continued his training at Lafayette High School and the Art Students League, studying anatomical drawing alongside Norman Rockwell. Rising to prominence in the 1960s as a leading figure in psychedelic art, he became known for his vibrant colors, bold graphic style, and eclectic, cosmic imagery, producing iconic works that adorned album covers, posters, and even a Continental Airlines jet. Blending pop culture, spirituality, and imaginative symbolism, Max built a visually striking and influential career that has continued to inspire audiences worldwide despite the trials and tribulations of his later years.
