Robert “Shoofly” Shufelt (born February 16, 1935, in Champaign, Illinois) is an American artist celebrated for his masterful graphite drawings and lithographs that authentically depict contemporary Western ranch and cowboy life. After earning a degree from the University of Illinois and spending about two decades as a commercial illustrator in Chicago, he moved with his wife, Julie, to a ranch near Wickenburg, Arizona, in 1976, immersing himself in the daily realities of the cowboy world he would make the focus of his art; later he established his home in New Mexico, where he continues to work. Shufelt’s finely detailed, dynamic black‑and‑white works, noted for their disciplined draftsmanship and deep respect for his subjects, have been exhibited in galleries and museums nationwide and have earned him honors including the Prix de West’s Great American Cowboy Award, New Mexico Artist of the Year, and the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts.
