Samella Lewis (1923-2022) American, Oil on Canvas. Signed and dated. Abstract artwork with trees. Darker colors of red, blue, black, and a lighter green. The theme depicts her childhood trauma.
Provenance: Given as a gift to the consignor's wife, co-faculty members at State University of New York - Plattsburg.Overall Size: 41 1/2 x 49 in.
Sight Size: 35 1/2 x 34 1/4 in.Samella Lewis, a trailblazing artist and art historian, dedicated her life to elevating African American art. Born in 1924 in New Orleans, she believed art was a powerful voice for community and cultural identity. After studying under sculptor Elizabeth Catlett, Lewis earned a Ph.D. in art history—the first African American woman to do so—and went on to found the first Black-owned art publishing house. As a professor, author, and founder of the Museum of African American Art and International Review of African-American Art, she created vital platforms for Black artists. Her own work, rich with personal experience, was widely exhibited and honored with prestigious awards, including the UNICEF Award for the Visual Arts.
