Samson Hand Painted Three-Handled Porcelain Mug. White porcelain two-handled loving cup or caudle cup, intricately decorated with floral sprays and a central heraldic crest flanked by two birds.
Size: 5 1/2 x 8 x 8 in.
Samson, Edmé et Cie is a Paris-based company founded in the mid-19th century that specialized in producing high-quality reproductions and adaptations of earlier European porcelain styles. Rather than creating entirely original patterns, the firm became well known for skillfully imitating renowned makers such as Meissen, Sèvres, and Chelsea Porcelain Factory, often marking pieces in ways that closely resembled the originals. Despite this reputation for copying, Samson wares are valued today for their craftsmanship, historical significance, and role in the 19th-century revival of interest in earlier decorative arts, with many pieces now recognized as collectible in their own right.
