One of the most important periods in the development of Western music was the 18th through 19th Century, with a key region being the part of Central Europe that makes up modern-day Germany and Austria. In the wake of the Renaissance, the area bloomed both culturally and economically, and musical patronage and the exchange (or competition) of cultural elements became a fundamental part of this. Titans of music were born and (more importantly) nurtured, both by their families and by heads of state, with their legacies resonating long after their deaths: Joseph Hadyn (1732-1809), Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), Richard Wagner (1813-1883), Johann Strauss II (1825-1899), Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (who lived a mere 35 years from 1756 to 1791) became the giants whose shoulders most of the composers in the following centuries stood upon.
