Sheryl L. White was born in 1950 in Roslindale, Massachusetts, an affluent suburb of Boston. Growing up she was drawn to both art and botany, and was able to explore them together in her future work. She attended the University of Michigan College of Architecture and Design, where she majored in painting and minored in art history. She designed sets for plays, interior spaces in several dorms, and earned a teaching certificate in arts education before returning to her home town to pursue art as a full time job. She was involved in numerous group exhibitions in the 1980s in the Boston area, and had her first solo show in 1983. Working primarily in oils, she captured realistic landscapes as well as abstract modern pieces, influenced by light and color theory. In 1993 she opened her own company, Sheryl White Garden Design, which consulted with residential and commercial clients and installed gardens of many shapes and sizes. This led her to become directly involved with visitor engagement, education, and coordination services for the Arnold Arboretum under Harvard University from the 2000s onward, where her two loves are intermingled as she curates new works alongside her own to grace the exhibition center on the Arboretum grounds. She continued to make art and teach there to this day.
Excellent.
