Stanley Wingate Woodward was born in 1891 in Rockport, Massachusetts, and divided much of his life between there and Florida, starting when his family made annual winter pilgrimages after he turned five. He studied drawing at the Boston Museum of Fine Art when he was a teen and graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1912, listed in Who’s Who in American Art and considered one of the country’s best known marine painters. He became an instructor at the Ringling School of Art for the winter season of 1937, teaching a class in landscape and marine painting, with later winter studios in Winter Park and St. Augustine while holding annual one-man exhibits in Boston galleries for more than 30 years. Today his work is found in the collections of Bowdoin College, Amherst College, Wheaton College, Northfield School for Girls, Lehigh University, and the Prudential Life Insurance collection. A veteran of World Wars I and II, Woodward was the author of “Adventure in Marine Painting,” a semi-autobiographical account of trying to make art in wartime. Actress Bette Davis was his niece, and he painted several pieces for her in his lifetime. He died in 1970 in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
