Swiss Jaeger LeCouture Atmos Mantel Clock. Vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos clock featuring a gold-plated brass and glass cabinet that houses a "perpetual motion" mechanism powered by atmospheric pressure changes.
Size: 5 3/4 x 7 3/4 x 9 1/4 in.
The Atmos clock is a unique mechanical clock developed by Jaeger‑LeCoultre that runs almost indefinitely without conventional winding, drawing its energy from tiny changes in ambient temperature and air pressure. Inside, a sealed capsule filled with gas expands and contracts with even slight environmental fluctuations, powering a torsion pendulum that oscillates very slowly — about once per minute — allowing the clock to operate on minimal energy. Introduced in the 1930s, the Atmos became a symbol of horological ingenuity and refined design, often housed in elegant glass cases that showcase its delicate mechanism. Prized by collectors and frequently given as diplomatic gifts, it represents one of the closest practical realizations of a “perpetual” mechanical clock.
