Thai Sterling Silver Pierced and Repoussed Byzantine Cross Pendant - 0.570 ozt. Stunningly detailed, after forms that appeared in the Victorian Era. Marked "925" with the word "THAI" on the back bottom.
Size: 3 1/2 x 2 1/4 in.
Gross Weight: 0.570 ozt.
The Byzantine cross, dating back to the 4th Century Roman Empire, is a key symbol of Eastern Christian faith, often featuring flared ends, delicate engraving, and sometimes two or three horizontal bars. Unlike the Western focus on the crucifixion, the Byzantine cross often emphasizes the "victory" and divine nature of Christ, historically worn as jewelry and often produced in gold or silver with opulent decorations, reflecting the Eastern embracing of decadence after the fall of Rome, unlike the more Western austerity that evolved during the Dark Ages.
