Vintage Chinese Hand Carved Wood Hotei. Large hand carved and lacquered wood statue of Hotei, the Laughing Buddah.
Hotei, often referred to as the "Laughing Buddha," is a folkloric figure from Chinese and Japanese tradition, not to be confused with the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama. Depicted as a rotund, cheerful monk with a large belly and a cloth sack, Hotei embodies contentment, generosity, and abundance. His image is often found in homes and temples as a symbol of good fortune, happiness, and prosperity. He is also considered one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology, representing the ideal of a joyful, carefree spirit who brings blessings wherever he goes.
