- Lot Description
Vintage German Mauthe Art Deco Floating Brass Wind Up Table Clock. Clean lines on either side of a panel of glass in which the minimalist face floats give this Bauhaus-inspired work an elegant appearance.
Size: 8 1/2 x 2 x 5 1/2 in.
In 1844 Friedrich Mauthe and his wife Maria founded a company in Schwenningen to produce watch parts, and by the late 1860s they were producing their own wall clocks, as well as their own movements. In 1876 their sons took over the business, and by the turn of the century they were well-known throughout Europe for their alarm clocks, pendulum wall clocks, desk clocks, and a wide variety of styles, with over 1,100 employees working at their factory. In 1904 the 3rd generation of the Mauthe family took over the business, and began to produce wrist watches in the 1920s, with many going to export markets until the end of the Weimar Republic. During the early days of Nazi Germany they supplied watches for the army, but the factory was shuttered during World War II and did not resume manufacturing until the family returned to Germany in 1946. However, the Quartz Crisis decimated the mechanical watchmaking industry throughout Europe, and eventually led to their closure in 1976.
