In 1907 Herbert Marcus Sr., Carrie Marcus Neiman, and A.L. Neiman founded Neiman Marcus in Dallas after famously rejecting an opportunity to invest in the fledgling Coca-Cola company. The store quickly dominated the local market by providing high-quality New York fashions to oil-rich Texans, allowing the business to rebuild even after a devastating fire in 1914. Under the leadership of Stanley Marcus, the firm pioneered the weekly retail fashion show and successfully diversified into menswear and affordable lines during the Great Depression. The company began a national expansion in 1971, opening its first store outside Texas in Bal Harbour, Florida, and eventually growing to over 30 cities across the United States. Following the acquisition of Bergdorf Goodman in 1987, the brand maintained its status as a luxury icon through the 1990s, though ownership changed hands several times after Stanley's death in 2002. After exiting bankruptcy following the 2020 pandemic, the Neiman Marcus Group is currently owned by an investment consortium and plans to merge with its rival, Saks Fifth Avenue, in 2026.
