Vintage Thai Bronze Buddha Riding Naga.
Size: 4 x 10 x 6 in.
Depictions of the Buddha riding or being sheltered by a naga—a serpent deity common in South and Southeast Asian mythology—symbolize protection, spiritual authority, and the harmony between humans and nature. In Buddhist tradition, nagas are considered guardians of water and treasures, and they often appear in narratives where they shield the Buddha from storms or danger during meditation. Sculptures and paintings frequently show the naga coiled beneath or forming a protective hood over the seated Buddha, emphasizing themes of shelter, divine support, and the subjugation of worldly obstacles. These images, found across Thailand, Cambodia, and India, convey both aesthetic elegance and profound symbolic meaning, highlighting the Buddha’s mastery over fear, the natural world, and spiritual challenges.
