William Merritt Chase (1849–1916) was a prominent American painter and influential teacher known for his vibrant impressionist style and versatility across portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. Trained in Munich and later active in New York, Chase brought European academic rigor and painterly flourish to American art, blending bravura brushwork with a keen eye for modern life. He was a founding figure in the development of American Impressionism and taught generations of artists at institutions such as the Art Students League and the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art. Equally adept in oil and pastel, Chase's work often captured scenes of domestic elegance, urban parks, and sunlit beaches, celebrating light, color, and the pleasure of observation. His legacy endures through both his prolific output and his lasting impact as a mentor to many of the leading artists of the early 20th century.
