Charles Meryon (1821-1968) is considered France’s greatest artist at handling the etching medium. His works, primarily between 1848 and 1852 provided an important historical record of the transformation of Paris from a medieval city to the modern city that we know today.
This print, Le Petit Pont, features the small bridge crossing the Seine River with the twin towers of Notre Dame in the background. Nine states were produced between 1850 and 1858. This piece from the 4th state, before the removal of the vice marks and the left border line, was printed on fine wove paper. Image, 10.25" x 7.5".
