- Lot Description
2 (Two) interesting Civil War items including a fragment from the flag which flew above the Confederate capitol at Richmond, Virginia at the time of surrender, with provenance penned by Lt. Col. A.B. Lawrence on 24th Army Corps Quartermaster letterhead and dated April 25, 1865, together with a rare silk 38 star GAR medal flag with numerous signatures and locations of the signers
Condition
Quartermaster letter with fold tear and minor staining, GAR flag with numerous tears and degradation to silk. The letter to which the flag remnant is attached confirms that the fragment is from the flag which flew above the capitol at Richmond at the surrender of the city on April 3, 1865. The last paragraph of the letter is of particular interest, stating in part that "the flag... was cut up and distributed... the rope being significantly left in the capitol for the special benefit of "Jeff Davis". Lt. Col. A.B. Lawrence was Quartermaster of the U.S. Army 24th Corps, his unit being in Richmond at the time of surrender, GAR flag dimensions listed
