- Lot Description
Featured here is one of the most iconic and recognizable images of the "Great Bambino" wearing his classic Yankee home pinstripes that made him one of the most famous and beloved superstars in American history. The breathtaking image of Ruth on this R309-1 Goudey Premiums oversized card dates to Ruth's final season with the Bronx Bombers.
These '34 Goudey Premiums are highly desirable and were originally offered by the gum company in exchange for fifty wrappers from their 1933 series with an advertised expiration date of Nov. 1, 1933. Ruth's copy and three team premiums made up the entire checklist, with his being the lone single player. Getting 50 cents worth of wrappers for one baseball card back in 1933 was a tall ask as that 50-cent cost amounts to $12.36 in 2025 dollars.
Graded PSA GD 2, this lovely exemplar has a pop of 14 with only six graded higher. (To date, PSA has only authenticated 75 total; 68 with the easel.) Very well-centered with a smooth surface, the easel on the back is still perfectly intact, allowing the original owner to display the "Sultan of Swat" prominently on his nightstand. Aside from very minor corner wear, this card merits a higher grade than its given assessment. Wonderful example with eye appeal much better than GD 2.
