Wilt Chamberlain’s varsity debut season as a sophomore at Kansas University left the nation in awe, and yet much to be desired. In his first game, Chamberlain set then-school records with 52 points and 31 rebounds on his way to averages of 29.6 points and 18.9 rebounds for the 1956-57 season. The Jayhawks made it to the NCAA Championship game behind its star 7’ 1” center, losing in heartbreaking fashion by one point, 54-53, to UNC. As a junior, Wilt averaged 30.1 points and 17.5 boards over 21 games. KU did not make the 1958 NCAA tournament, but young Dipper had his share of highlights. On February 15, 1958, he set a new school record (still standing) with 36 rebounds in a 90-61 blowout victory over Iowa State at Allen Fieldhouse.
Until now, no memorabilia associated with this game has surfaced. Many years ago, our consignor acquired this used ticket stub, along with other vintage Jawhawks basketball collectibles, from the estate of KU’s legendary coach Phog Allen. PSA has never authenticated any ticket from this game, and this is the only known example slabbed by Beckett. The vibrant stub has incredible aesthetics for an early vintage basketball stub with colorful depictions of hoopsters and the classic Jayhawk logo. The “West Bleacher $2.00” ticket includes game date details and is stamped “Jayhawk Fund”. The ticket has been torn on the right side for entry, and the reverse has some spotting that Beckett has identified as a “Mark” on the flip label.
