- Lot Description
The dominant duo of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal delivered an epic Three-Peat dynasty for the Los Angeles Lakers in the early 2000’s. By the summer of 2003, however, the two megastars’ alpha personalities had clashed to a point where the damage seemed beyond repair. Adding more fuel to the fire was Kobe’s sexual assault case in Colorado that threatened to destroy his marriage and became a constant distraction for the team.
Offered here is a rare Kobe Bryant Lakers road uniform from that drama-filled 2003-04 season. 25-year-old Mamba averaged 24.0 points, 5.1 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game – his lowest totals in three seasons. The Lakers made it back to the NBA Finals, losing to Detroit in five games and leading to Shaq being traded to Miami in the offseason. While Laker fans may want to forget this tumultuous campaign, oddly enough it presents an opportunity for collectors. Few Kobe 2003-04 gamers have surfaced, and none have been photo-matched according to our research. The provenance of this full uniform is unknown, but accurate specs and player tagging along with MEARS’s assessment indicates it was likely worn by Kobe. His autograph on the jersey makes this uniform especially appealing.
On the left front tail is a Nike size 52 manufacturer’s tag with a LENGTH +4 flag tag. On the left inseam is a materials tag with washing instructions and a “2003-04" Nike year tag. On the left chest is an official NBA logo embroidered patch. Across the chest is “LAKERS” and across the upper back is an arched “BRYANT” both in gold on white tackle twill. His player number “8” appears front and back in the opposite format. Bryant has signed “Kobe” on the back number in 9/10 black marker. The 100% Polyester Dri-Fit jersey exhibits moderate usage with stretching, puckering and light fraying. The matching trunks come in size 46 with Kobe’s No. “8” handwritten in black on the Nike jock tag. Both the jersey and trunks have adhesive remnants (easily removable) from it being previously mounted and displayed in a frame. There are some tears in the fabric that presumably occurred when it was removed from its internal matting.
Includes MEARS A5 letter (min. grade for post-1992 jersey without provenance) and full LOA from Beckett for autograph. (It should be noted that we did not attempt to get the uniform professionally photo-matched as the consignor was not willing to pay for the service.)
